Poultry Project Sends Ten New Missionaries

Few things get us more excited than taking the gospel to the nations. So when an opportunity arose in 2020 for a strategic partnership with an Ethiopian missions agency that has trained and sent more than 200 Ethiopian missionaries to unreached people groups throughout the Horn of Africa, we very gladly accepted.

According to Joshua Project, there are still 83 unreached people groups throughout the Horn of Africa. An unreached people group is those among whom Christ is largely unknown and the local church does not exist or is relatively insufficient to make him known.

We were invited last year to assist this agency in launching a business-as-missions initiative that would generate funds locally to sustain and support more missionaries to be trained and sent. Because of the generosity of our church family in giving to the missions fund, we were able to provide the initial funding needed to start a new poultry project. Government leaders in Durame, Ethiopia also partnered by donating land, and a group of local believers began to lead the project and develop its concept over the past year.

Today, we’re excited to report that this project is bearing fruit—or more accurately, eggs. After five months of laying, the agency’s 700+ chickens are now at their maximum number 500+ eggs per day. Selling 14 eggs for 100 birr ($2 USD), this group is generating regular revenue for their missionaries, and their customers are happily receiving two extra eggs over other market offerings.

To date, our partner has sold nearly 200,000 birr ($3,880 USD) worth of eggs, and they continue to bring in an average of 4,000 birr ($77 USD) each day. This will fully fund the training and sending of ten new missionaries.

Our shared desire with this team is to multiply two coops of over 700 chickens to a total of five coops and 1,750 chickens in 2023, leading to the funding, training, and sending of 50 missionaries total to unreached people groups in the Horn of Africa.

Pray for protection for this project and the team, and pray that the gospel will go to all 83 unreached people groups in the area.
